One in five women in Australia have experienced stalking, with women most likely to be stalked by a man they know, according to new results from the Australian Bureau of Statistics.

Two million women in the country (20% of the adult female population), and 650,000 men (6.8%), have experienced stalking since the age of 15, according to new results from the 2021-22 Personal Safety Survey, released today.

Young women (aged 18-34) and those living with financial stress were more likely to experience stalking than older and more financially secure women.

“We found one in five women and one in 15 men have been stalked,” said William Milne, the ABS head of crime and justice statistics.

Eighty-eight per cent of women who reported stalking in the survey were stalked by a man and 12% by a woman, whereas men were equally likely to be stalked by a man or a woman.

“Women were almost eight times more likely to be stalked by a male than by a female, while men were stalked by a male and by a female at a similar rate,” Milne said.

Seventy-eight per cent of women were stalked by a man they knew, with the perpetrator most commonly a current or former intimate partner (45%).

Half of the women who were stalked by a male intimate partner were assaulted or threatened with assault by that same partner and 83% said the stalking by their male intimate partner had affected at least one area of their life, such as social life, home life, work or school life or having to change contact details.

Half of the women who were stalked by a male intimate partner were stalked for more than a year, and 25% were stalked for more than three years.

Elise Phillips, the deputy chief executive of Domestic Violence NSW, said the data was critical to understanding the nature and extent of domestic violence within Australia.

“Stalking is one of many behavioural patterns that can occur in domestic violence,” she said. “This data is consistent with the NSW domestic violence death review that revealed one-third of homicide victims experienced stalking during their relationship.”

The most common form of stalking of a woman by a male intimate partner was maintaining unwanted contact by phone, male, email, text message or social media (78%), followed by loitering or hanging around their location (60%), following or tracking their location (52.5%) and inappropriate online posting or impersonation (26.4%), with most victims experiencing multiple forms of stalking.

The digital age offers platforms for freelancing, online trading, and e-commerce, allowing individuals to leverage skills and creativity for financial gain. Cryptocurrency investments continue to allure with potential for quick profits, yet they entail high volatility and risk. Moreover, the rise of the gig economy enables flexible work arrangements through apps and websites, offering quick payouts but often without job security or benefits.
