Great Dane Puppy ‘Completely Unaware’ of Size Tries to Squeeze onto Couch

Because puppies are still learning the ropes of life, they are often unaware of their playfulness, behavior and size, but one thing is certain—they hold onto determination like no other.

Blissfully unaware of her size as one of the tallest dog breeds in the world, a Great Dane puppy wanted to rest on the couch in a July 15 TikTok video posted by user @lillymygreatdane. However, a Bernese mountain dog was taking up a majority of the couch. That didn’t stop this 24-week-old puppy.

Right between the armrest and the Bernese mountain dog was the tiniest sliver of available space. Lilly looked at the spot, which was barely the size of her paw, and took her chance. She placed one paw after the other onto the couch, squeezing her way in between and plopped down. The caption reads: “When you are completely unaware of your size.”

The other dog luckily didn’t seem to mind, staying put in exactly the same spot. However, the Bernese mountain dog did flash a “Is this really happening” look to the owner as the gentle giant took her place.

Lilly, on the other hand, didn’t see any problem with the spot she picked. In her mind, she is a tiny lap dog who can sit anywhere, which isn’t uncommon for this dog breed to think.

A Dogster article says that Great Danes are affectionate and love to cuddle. They are often unaware of how large they stand, which leads them to believe they can do things smaller dogs do, such as sitting on laps.

Owners can train their Great Dane to avoid sitting on their lap—Dogster recommends that especially for households with children and the elderly. However, it usually isn’t a problem if you don’t mind these lap-sitting dogs.

Newsweek reached out to @lillymygreatdane via TikTok for additional comment.

‘If I fits, I sits’

As of Friday, the TikTok clip reached more than 422,500 views, 9,606 likes and 86 comments. While most viewers were cracking up over the dog’s determination to get on the couch, others weren’t the least bit surprised, claiming it is typical Great Dane behavior.

“If I fits, I sits,” joked a viewer, while another added: “Completely unaware, and apparently clingy!”

A TikToker confirmed that this happens to them, too: “Our Great Dane puppy does this to our Newfoundland constantly.”

And it turns out, it doesn’t fade as Great Danes age. Someone wrote: “My Dane is 2 and 170lbs. He does this to me regularly.”
